Zawodny is working at Yahoo. He is getting lots of comments in spite of this crappy comment processing cycle.
Here is what I was told after I posted a comment:

An approval from the commentator. Then an approval from the moderator. And don’t forget to solve the “Captcha” in the form.

Did you not get an email containing a link you could use to approve the comment yourself? You should have. If not, it’s a bug–nothing personal.

It’s certainly excessive. I kind of like the system I am using (hashcash-like) but of course, it doesn’t really prevent any targetted attack. It’s not invasive though.
